What makes knitting such a challenge is that you are making the fabric and the garment all at the same time.  But the nature of the fabric has a lot to do with the garment will fit.  Learn to use a gauge swatch to create a fabric you like and then see how you can adjust the pattern to get the fit you want.  It's not as hard as you might think!

Patterns are written for standard sizes, but most of our bodies deviate from the standard size and shape in one way or another.  Simply going up or down a size often fails to produce the fit you want.  Learn how to decode what a pattern says about size, shape, and fit.  Practice measuring a favorite garment.  Then learn how you can compare to the schematic to assess how the pattern will fit you---and what modifications you may need to make.
